Cable Cars

San Francisco is famous for its cable cars, they feature in almost any film or documentary that highlights the city and apart from being a very practical mode of transport, they are also beautiful to look at. The cable cars operate from 6:30 am until 12:30 am seven days a week. You may purchase your $2 ticket from the conductor on board where exact change is required. The cable car was introduced to San Francisco on August 2, 1873. Besides creating a vital link in San Francisco's public transportation system, the cable car opened the door for building on steep hills which until this time was thought to be impossible. Throughout the 1890s, eight transit companies operated 600 cars which covered 21 cable car routes and a total of 52.8 miles. Cable cars remained the main mode of transportation for the populus until the 1906 earthquake. The quake and the raging fires that followed destroyed most of the cable car system, and as the City rebuilt, few lines were restored. A municipal railway replaced most lines. In 1982 the City began a two-year major restoration project which shut down the system. San Francisco's cable cars are the only vehicles of their kind still in operation and are designated National Landmarks.
