Coit Tower is 210 feet tall and located on top of Telegraph Hill.
The Tower is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. It
was built with funds left to the City by philanthropist Lillie
Hitchcock Coit for the beautification of San Francisco. When she
died, she left the funds to create a memorial to volunteer firemen
in this city that burned to the grounds on a number of occasions
before a paid fire department was finally established. From atop
the east side of the tower there is a 360 degree view. Inside,
you'll find murals that depict working life in 1930s California
and a local history museum. From the tower you can walk down the
Greenwich Steps to Montgomery Street, and from there turn right
to catch the Filbert Steps which lead to Sansome and Filbert streets,
a short distance from the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf. The
steep walkways pass beautiful cottages and private gardens. Even
repeat visitors to San Francisco find that a trip to Coit Tower
is well worth it and for first timers to this scenic city the views
will bring them back again and again. |
