San Francisco : North Beach

North Beach is situated between Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf. It's a lively stretch of bars, strip joints, cafes and restaurants that started as the city's Italian quarter. The neighbourhood is hemmed in on the east by Telegraph Hill, which features tree-shaded stairways that ramble down the steep eastern face of the hill, and Coit Tower. This still mainly Italian neighbourhood is well known for its restaurants, bakeries, gelato parlours, espresso bars, and coffee shops and roasteries. It is a very popular area for young professionals and folks looking for great Italian food and popular night spots. Popular sights to see in North Beach include Washington Square, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and St. Francis of Assisi Church, dedicated as a shrine to San Francisco's namesake, St. Francis. The Church of St Peter and Paul is the location of Marilyn Munroe and Joe DiMaggio's wedding photographs. Italian immigrants who first arrived in San Francisco in the 1860s chose North Beach because it reminded them of home and, up until the 1940s, offered affordable housing. North Beach's population prior to the arrival of the Italians included Irish, Mexicans, Germans, Spanish, Australians and Chileans. The Beatnik era of the 1950s attracted poets and artists. Today, North Beach is still the Little Italy of the West Coast, with a growing Chinese population blending into the mix.
